Solemnity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Luke 2:15-19

Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her Heart

This is the stance that Mary took in the face of God's extraordinary actions. She did not understand everything, but submitted her own need to know to God's plan of salvation. She realized early on that God simply eludes definition. The totality of his movement is outside the human capacity to grasp. She had her own fears and doubts when God first made known to her his plan that enjoined her full participation. She made a leap of faith, surrendering herself to the mystery as it unfolded in her life with far reaching consequence not just for her but for all humanity. She gave herself completely to God, and the rest was history.

St. John Eudes recognized this stance and the important role she played in God's manifestation of his love for everyone. As a way to adore and praise God for this wondrous mystery, he wrote the first ever liturgical celebration that honored God's work in the most pure heart of Mary. It was first celebrated on February 8, 1648, a solemnity for the Eudists and the broader Eudist family.

In honoring Mary, who decided to give all of herself to the Divine will, we praise God who continues to reach out to us, bending down into our human existence that he may bring us into eternal Communion through Jesus!

Ave Maria! Through your intercession, may we be ever mindful of God's presence in our hearts and learn to give ourselves to Jesus in all creation. Amen.
