St Patrick Catholic Community in Carlsbad is united in prayer and solidarity to our brothers and sisters affected by hurricane Haiyan.
Thanks to the generosity and compassion of our parishioners at St. Patrick's Community, we raised over US $ 14,600.00 in donations.
This enables the Rotary Club of Carlsbad to purchase 12 Shelter Boxes to be sent to the Philippines, and will allow people to have shelter, hope and dignity in trying to re-establish their lives.
Each Shelter box sent contains:
One disaster relief tent for an extended family (can easily house 8 to ten people, inside the box there is also a range of other survival equipment including pots and pans, also a gas stove and gas supply to be able to cook, plates, bowls, forks and spoons, toys for children, also thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, essential in areas where temperatures plummet at nightfall. Also mosquito nets are supplied to prevent Malaria, as well as life-saving means of water purification. Water supplies often become contaminated after a major disaster, as infrastructure and sanitation systems are destroyed. The water purification equipment included will provide a typical family up to three years worth of clean and safe water.
It also contains a basic tool kit, which then when it is possible helps to start repairing or rebuilding the home they were forced to leave.
Two of our parishioners were instrumental on this effort, thank You Jim and Ursula Sweeney.
In addition a $2,600 donation has been forwarded to Catholic Relief Services. Clothing and toys were collected last week and shipped this past Saturday to the Philippines. St. Patrick School has taken up a monetary collection in every classroom (a total was not available in time for publication of this bulletin).
May God bless those who helped and those affected by this natural disaster, but may they also know we are one body, and when one part of the body suffers, we all suffer, but in Christ we can call heal and be one again.
