Living the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

picture from"Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that sickness, nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything."

(Words of Our Lady to Juan Diego)

Today, we celebrate the apparition of Our Lady to Juan Diego, whose name we now honor as Our Lady of
Guadalupe. Mary is our Mother, more than the Queen of Heaven as we hear and read in our traditional devotions to her. She bore the Son of God in her heart then at her womb, showing us the way that Christ needs to be born in our hearts, in order for Him to live and act in our lives.

What exactly can we get from this Feast of Our Lady? She revealed herself as the “virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth” who comes down to us to show us the mercy and steadfast love of the Triune God. In her role as mediatrix, her presence to the people of the Americas and ultimately to the whole of creation, shows us the feminine side of God, that is of a mother’s compassion and love for her children. We are her children, as we believe that Jesus is our brother thru His paschal mystery. We shared the title Children of God, and only fitting since Mary is our mother when Jesus told the apostle John, “she is your mother.” Let us come to her, and whisper our intentions that through her special intercession, grant healing to our hearts, and peace in these times of uncertainty and fear. Moreover, with her same intercession, lead us to incarnate Jesus in our hearts just like what she did in the Annunciation.

I remember also when Mary told the helpers in the gospel of John, “do whatever he tells you.” In Christian discipleship, we hear that Mary is the first disciple as she showed us how to approach Jesus, “do whatever He tells you.” May our lives always do what Jesus intends us to do, that is to love unconditionally, to forgive seventy-times seven times, and acts of mercy that shows forth the Heart of Jesus!

Thousands if not millions people was blessed, healed and went back to believe in God because of Our Lady in Guadalupe. Her story is unfinished as salvation history is looking forward in the Second Coming of Christ. Her miracles continue to touch countless men and women all over the world, because her story is that of the steadfast love of God to His children.

As we continue to prepare for Christmas, may this Feast inflame in our hearts the desire to welcome Jesus in our hearts, that He may be born again in the hearts and men and women who yearn for the presence of God and transform our world into a community of love, mercy, and compassion.

Vive Jesus et Marie!
