Awake in Christ

By: Br. DJ Garcia [cjm]

First Sunday of Advent (B)
Mk 13:33-37

In today’s gospel we are admonished to “keep awake”, “be alert”, and “be on guard”. All these point to the truth of the unexpected time Christ’s coming in glory. We await and prepare for it. We live in anticipation of it, but sometimes living our lives that is too focused on the future and in preparation for it may rob us of living in the present moment. It is true that we ought to live our lives in reference to the future but let it not detract us from savoring life in all its bitterness and sweetness. Let it also remind us that we need not be resigned to our present condition. We are called to live in hope and this hope is anchored in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ has come in the past when he became man and lived in time; he continues to come to us in the present through our day-to-day realities, and indeed, he will come to us in all his majesty as a merciful judge. The challenge is to live our lives in God’s presence and surely that will change the meaning of our present. Living with Christ and in Christ is the surest foundation of a “prepared” life. Let us then be taught and be guided by Him in Scripture and be nourished by Him in the sacraments.

As we begin the new liturgical year with the season of Advent, the Church reminds us to wait in joyful hope for the coming of Christ. In the meantime, Christ comes to us in the poor and in the needy. How are we to respond? Likewise, we appraise ourselves as to which parts or what areas of our lives are “sleeping” and needs to be “awakened” in Christ. We, in all humility then invite him, “Come, Lord Jesus!”
