Leaked HHS Interim Final Rule Proves Women’s Rights And Conscience Can Coexist

For six years, organizations with religious and moral objections to certain contraceptive products and services have been fighting for their religious freedom against the harsh mandates of Obamacare. The question brought repeatedly before federal courts hasn’t been about limiting access to contraception, only why the federal government is forcing faithful objectors to violate their beliefs.

Fortunately, President Trump and his administration are a breath away from dispensing with this controversy, which has been one of the most unnecessary fights in recent American legal history.

On May 4, 2017, the President took a crucial step forward by issuing an Executive Order directing Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price to reconsider the mandate. Just recently, a copy of the interim final rule has appeared in the press, proving what we knew all along: women’s contraceptive coverage can be provided without forcing religious organizations to provide them.

Under Obamacare’s coercive HHS mandate, religious ministries like the Little Sisters of the Poor faced an impossible choice: either deny their deeply held beliefs and provide coverage for drugs they deem to be morally objectionable, or face paying tens of millions of dollars a year to the federal government in penalties.

Meanwhile, the health plans for huge corporations like Exxon and Pepsi are exempted from this mandate altogether. Only in Washington would anyone call this “fair.” It certainly isn’t common sense.

As a one-time single mother of three, a nurse of more than 40 years and a female Member of Congress in an institution long dominated by men, I understand from personal experience the weight and variety of demands that life throws at women. Our lives shift in seasons, each bringing its own joys and challenges. I also know that the dichotomy that was set up under the Obama Administration pitting religious belief against access to contraception was false and unnecessary.

The HHS contraceptive mandate was challenged before the Supreme Court five separate times. The fifth time, President Obama’s own Department of Justice finally conceded that it was possible to accomplish expanding general contraceptive coverage to women without hijacking the Little Sisters’ insurance plan or their faith.

Since coming to Congress, I have been the lead sponsor on legislation to address the attack onprivileged to lead more than 200 Members of Congress in submitting an amicus brief at the Supreme Court on their behalf. Religious freedom has been at the core identity of our nation since our founding. There’s no excuse to trample on those personal rights unnecessarily. That is why I am proud to see the Trump Administration beginning to right this wrong.
religious women, like the Little Sisters, created by the HHS mandate, and I was

Today I am joined by 72 of my colleagues in urging HHS to publish this draft rule immediately to ensure that religious organizations and family businesses never have to face Obamacare’s penalties for living life according to their personal beliefs.

Eudist Associates: New life, New leaders!

More and more people are discovering the vibrant spirituality of St. John Eudes and the way in which it nourishes a life of active faith. This means that more leadership is necessary to support these new friends of the Eudists.

A steering committee of five Eudist Associates has been formed to organize events for those connected to the Eudist Family. This team sends out a monthly e-newsletter to communicate Family news as it happens to those who are interested, and to notify supporters of upcoming events.

One beautiful resource made available in this e-newsletter is a guided prayer session composed for the 19th of every month (commemorating August 19th, St. John Eudes’ feast day). The prayer includes scripture mediations, relevant passages from Eudist writings, and guided points for meditation. Every 19th of the month, members of the Eudist family from around the world lift their hearts to God in unison with this “Prayer of the 19th.”

To be added to the email list, send a message to: subscriptions@eudistsusa.org

Another valuable addition to the Family leadership comes with the hiring of Mr. Daniel Williams as Financial Controller for the US Region. Daniel comes to us with years of experience in both commercial and nonprofit accounting. In his studies at John Paul the Great Catholic University he was the salutatorian for his Bachelor’s in Business and valedictorian for his MBA in Nonprofit management. He also has three incredibly cute children who love him to pieces.

Daniel will take on the vital role of monitoring and accounting for all the resources donated by our generous supporters. As we continue to grow, he will guide us through implementing new internal systems which correspond better with legal requirements for a nonprofit of our unique size and category. It has been becoming increasingly evident that it is time for us to meet these growth areas head-on.

Daniel’s shouldering of the accounting responsibilities will take a significant burden off of Steve Marshall, the other employee of the US Region who has been serving as both Regional Secretary and Business Administrator. Steve will now be free to put his MA in Spiritual Theology to work in producing new materials on St. John Eudes and his spirituality for the Eudist Family. The primary focus for publishing this year will be on producing hardcopy books through Amazon.com’s convenient print-on-demand services. Much of our new spirituality materials have already been published in e-book form! To see them, check out our Amazon store: http://bit.ly/CJMebooks

Solemnity of Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

The very first time that there was a liturgical feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was on October 20,
1672. St. John Eudes, the founder of our Congregation, composed the Mass himself and asked that it be celebrated in all 13 houses (seminaries) of the CJM. He had already established a feast in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on February 8, 1648. In those intervening years, he pondered the close connection between the hearts of Jesus and Mary. In his mind, it was the love of God which united these great hearts. But, in order to avoid confusion and to more clearly show the centrality of Jesus to our Christian faith, he established this separate feast in honor of the Heart of Jesus.

For St. John Eudes, the Heart of Jesus is a manifestation of the great love that God has for us in giving us his only begotten Son. Jesus is the greatest expression of God’s love. The gospel which St. John Eudes chose for the feast recalls the words of Jesus: “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Live on in my love.” Not only is Jesus the gift of the Father’s love for us, but Jesus himself gives us his Heart. This is how St. John Eudes understands the words that the prophet Ezekiel puts on the lips of God: “I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts. And I will put my spirit within you.” Our hearts are not capable of loving God and one another as we should. Sometimes our hearts can be hard and cold. St. John Eudes returns to one of his recurring themes and tell us that we have to renounce those hard hearts. In doing so, we open ourselves up to the loving Heart of Jesus. Jesus will give us his heart so that we can love like he does.

Our open hearts are ready to receive God’s mercy. In this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are reminded that God’s mercy is unlimited. All we have to do is recognize our faults and allow the mercy of the Heart of Jesus to fill our hearts as well. We rejoice in the forgiveness God which is poured forth on us from the open Heart of Jesus.

For St. John Eudes, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a model of the way our hearts should be. As a symbol of God’s love, the Heart of Jesus embraces the poor and the suffering, it welcomes sinners, it reaches out to those who are neglected or shunned by society. So by giving up our hard hearts and receiving the Heart of Jesus, we are made able to love as we should.

So you can see that the spirituality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus proposed by St. John Eudes is quite apostolic. It is not merely about prayers, devotions and images. Those objects of devotion serve to remind us of the love of the Heart of Jesus in a way that moves us to love like he did. As we celebrate this feast, let our hearts be on fire with the love of God and show that love to all we meet, especially those who are in desperate needs of God’s love and mercy.
